As women, we’re all too familiar with balancing countless responsibilities, endless obligations, and absorbing new roles every day. That was exhausting just to type.

Between work, family, and personal obligations—no, wait, we mean family (of course), work, and THEN personal obligations—taking care of ourselves often falls to the bottom of the list. Additionally, when we take on the responsibility of caring for others—particularly our loved ones—it can quickly divert the time and energy we once devoted to our own wellness.

From stepping into the role of navigating your loved one’s healthcare, fighting on the phone for insurance approvals, all while trying to keep everyone else calm—everyone except yourself. It can easily become exhausting and overwhelming, leaving little room to focus on what truly matters.

It’s time to take a breath, this is where better healthcare and wellness support can make all the difference.

Let’s Back it Up - What is the Definition of Healthcare?

Healthcare, in its most basic form, refers to the services provided to individuals to maintain or improve their health.

It’s the system of professionals, treatments, and resources designed around prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Healthcare ensures individuals have access to resources that sustain their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

While we often think of doctors and hospitals, healthcare also includes mental health support, preventative measures, and guidance on navigating complex systems like insurance and long-term care planning.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines healthcare as a “complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being” rather than simply the absence of disease. This all-encompassing view highlights the critical role healthcare plays in our lives and underscores its complexity.

What Does Healthcare Involve?

Healthcare involves a broad range of services, from routine doctor’s visits and prescription management to specialized treatments and mental health support.

Think of it as a complex network of professionals, services, and systems working together to provide care. This system demands constant coordination, tracking medical records, scheduling appointments, and navigating insurance policies—a daunting task, especially for those managing it on behalf of a loved one.

It spans everything from primary care and specialist visits to therapy sessions, hospital stays, and even at-home nursing. However, modern healthcare is far from static. With constant advancements in medicine and technology, patients and caregivers are challenged to stay informed while navigating new treatments, digital tools, and ever-changing policies. The demands often feel relentless and, at times, nearly impossible to manage.

As busy individuals, we frequently overlook that healthcare also has a significant focus on wellness—promoting practices like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and stress management to maintain overall health.

Unfortunately, balancing complex healthcare responsibilities alongside our 72 other responsibilities often leaves little time or energy to invest in essential wellness habits - despite their importance as the foundation of our overall health.

Caring for a Loved One's Healthcare

“There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.”

- Rosalynn Carter

Carter’s powerful statement highlights the universal nature of caregiving and underscores the importance of supporting caregivers in every capacity, as it is a role we will all encounter in some form.

Statistics tell a stark story.

Did you know that nearly 1 in 4 U.S. adults act as caregivers for a family member or friend? Interestingly, most people in this role don’t even identify as caregivers (take a moment to let that sink in).

According to AARP, over 53 million Americans provide unpaid caregiving each year, and this number is steadily rising. As the population ages, the demand for family caregivers will continue to grow, creating an even greater burden on those managing their loved ones' healthcare. AARP also reports that many caregivers feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities, with 23% of them experiencing high levels of stress, as revealed in a 2020 study. For many, navigating the complex healthcare system is one of the greatest challenges.

While caregiving can be deeply rewarding, it’s undeniably demanding.

Individuals often juggle full-time work, family obligations, and their own well-being while managing their loved one’s appointments, medications, and treatments. The result? Exhaustion, overwhelm, and burnout are common realities.

Just take a moment to picture it.

A Day in the Life of Managing Healthcare for Your Loved One

You wake up early to get your elderly mother ready for a doctor’s visit.

You've already informed work that you'll be coming in late, even though it's the third time this month. Rushing to gather everything before heading out the door—insurance cards, medication details, and the important questions to ask the doctor—ensuring your mother, who experiences mild memory loss, receives the care she needs.

After a hectic morning, you finally get home and spend the next few hours on the phone with insurance companies, trying to get approval for a new medication her doctor prescribed, only to find out it’s likely not covered by your mother’s insurance.

Two hours of being transferred and left on hold by the insurance company, you realize the clock-in time you promised your boss is becoming increasingly unrealistic. Panic begins to set in.

On your drive to work, all you can think about are the follow-up appointments that still need to be scheduled and the uncertainty surrounding the copay for the new tests and additional visits.

An hour into your workday, you finally receive a call back from another doctor's office you've been trying desperately to reach. They inform you that your mother needs a referral from her primary care doctor before they can see her—the same primary care office she visited just this morning.

Great, another phone call.

Meanwhile, it’s noon and you still haven’t had a moment to yourself to take care of your own health. By the end of the day, you're too exhausted to think about the walk you promised yourself or the healthy dinner you planned to make for the family. Instead, you opt for takeout—quick and convenient.

Later that evening, you organize your mother's prescriptions, update medical records from today’s visit, and try to understand why the particular medication isn’t covered.

The stress mounts as your boss keeps 'pinging' you about your late submission, your neighbor Julie calls to check if you're still on for dinner tomorrow night, and your mother calls for the fourth time today, confirming you will be there in the morning for the drive to her doctor's appointment—your mother is confused, as you attended the appointment this morning.

You hate to admit it, but by the fourth phone call, you're beginning to feel resentful toward your mother. You know it's not her fault, but you can sense that it's slowly affecting your relationship.

By evening, you're too exhausted to focus on your own well-being, forgetting about your skincare routine or the new Pilates video you had planned.

This is a lot.

But -

This is the reality for millions of caregivers who sacrifice their wellness to support others.

Where to Start - Healthcare is Always Changing

The good news: the healthcare landscape is constantly evolving. The bad news: with new medical technologies, treatment options, and insurance policies emerging, it can be incredibly difficult to keep up.

Healthcare policies and systems seem to change overnight, and insurance companies regularly update their coverage rules and medical plans. For any individual or caregiver, understanding all of these moving parts while ensuring their loved one’s care isn’t interrupted is a monumental task.

Insurance changes, in particular, can leave people frustrated and confused. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, health insurance premiums have steadily increased, and navigating the complex world of insurance can feel like a full-time job on its own. Lovely.

Many feel they lack the tools or knowledge to advocate effectively for their loved ones, leading to delayed or inadequate care. Therefore, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. It begins with acknowledging that support is necessary.

Partnering with a service like West Status can transform how you approach these challenges. Our mission is to empower you to navigate these complexities without sacrificing your wellness.

Reclaim Your Time and Energy

Time is the most valuable resource we have, and caregiving can take away more than you expect.

We all know how important it is to take time for self-care, but when you’re managing the healthcare of a loved one, it can feel impossible.

Reclaiming your time means making space for the things that rejuvenate and restore you. Whether it’s waking up early for a morning routine, taking a walk outdoors, or simply relaxing with a book, the key to a healthy lifestyle is prioritizing your well-being.

By choosing West Status, you’re investing in your health, energy, and peace of mind. Let us help you take back the hours you’ve been giving away to phone calls and administrative tasks.

Here are 5 wellness habits you can embrace with your reclaimed time:

Try Mindfulness or Meditation

Even just a few minutes of mindfulness or meditation can help you clear your head and reduce stress. It's a small shift that can have a big impact on how you feel day-to-day. Consider connecting with gratitude through a daily journal. This can be as simple as writing down five things you are grateful for or care for at the moment.

Research indicates that practicing mindfulness can lead to a more optimistic outlook, reduced symptoms of depression, and improved mental health.

Move Your Body

Whether it's a daily walk, some light yoga, or a quick at-home workout, find time to move. It doesn't have to be a huge commitment, but getting in some exercise will boost your energy and improve your overall well-being. And yes, this is essential.

Get Better Sleep: Bon Jovi’s statement, "I'm going to sleep when I'm dead," unfortunately, proves inaccurate. With reclaimed time, you can prioritize sleep and actually get the rest you need.

Quality sleep is the foundation for good health. Practicing regular, uninterrupted sleep (about eight hours a night) guides you toward a healthier body, energetic mind, and glowing skin— all thanks to proper rest.

Cook Your Own Meals: Take the time to make a healthy meal. It doesn't need to be complicated, but preparing something nourishing helps you stay on top of your health and keeps you feeling your best.

Make Time for Self-Care: Whether it's a skincare routine, reading, or just some quiet time, reclaiming your day for self-care can help you feel refreshed and relaxed.
