If you only read one thing this week, let it be the practice of first things first - the only productivity tip you need.

Trust the practice, your future self will thank you.

This year, the journey towards becoming our best selves will involve embracing a slower pace, focusing on the broad scope of our vision board, and getting things right.

Honestly, taking it one step at a time.

Through our experience (primarily fuck ups), attempting a complete overhaul of change all at once often leads to setbacks. Instead, we are adopting a gradual approach to change. Focusing on one element, only then, to continue and progress toward your goals steadily - think building blocks.

Yes, we are building together.

Take a breath; we can almost sense your deep sigh from this end.

Rest assured, this is not another principle to integrate into your daily regimen or an additional task to tack onto your morning routine. West Status embodies embracing life's chaos, holding authenticity accountable, while shedding light on simplicity.

For layman's terms, life can be fucking chaotic, we are here to lend a hand.

So- let's talk.

What are your goals?

We all have goals. In the pursuit of our goals, consistency often proves to be the elusive ingredient that separates success from stagnation.

Lovely, right?

Yet, finding the discipline to consistently follow through on our commitments can feel like an uphill battle. This is where the productivity hack, 'First Things First' emerges as a guiding philosophy, advocating for tackling our most challenging tasks first thing in the morning.

First things first meaning

"First things first" is a phrase that dates back centuries and has its roots in various philosophical and religious teachings.

One notable source is the Bible, where it appears in Matthew 6:33:

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

This verse emphasizes the importance of prioritizing spiritual matters above worldly concerns.

Over time, the phrase has evolved into a common proverbial expression used to convey the idea of prioritizing tasks or actions based on their importance. It underscores the principle of tackling the most critical matters before addressing less significant ones, advocating for discipline.

Start your day with the most important tasks, here's why

The idea of, 'first things first' underscores the importance of prioritizing what matters most - first thing. Whether it's hitting the home gym or diving into your gratitude journal, embracing this principle can revolutionize our approach to productivity and goal attainment.

Try a, first things first, morning routine

Let's delve into the practical application of this practice with an all too familiar example: the morning workout.

For many, the thought of squeezing in exercise amidst the demands of work, family, and other obligations can be overwhelming.

You might be slightly surprised when we suggest that you do indeed have the time—just make sure to use it wisely.

In our example, by prioritizing exercise as the first task of the day, we set the stage for success.

According to experts, we even set our whole day up for success.

Fucking powerful.

More importantly, morning workouts offer a sanctuary of uninterrupted time, free from distractions and interruptions. By seizing the early morning hours, we bypass the temptation to procrastinate or make excuses, ensuring that our commitment to fitness remains unwavering.

The practice of 'first things first' can be crucial for several reasons, supported by both anecdotal evidence and scientific research.

The benefits behind completing your priorities first thing in the morning

  1. Cognitive Freshness - Our cognitive abilities, including focus, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, tend to be at their peak in the morning after a good night's rest. This freshness allows us to approach tasks with clarity and efficiency, making it an ideal time to tackle complex or high-priority tasks.

  2. Willpower and Self-Control - Throughout the day, our willpower and self-control become depleted as we make decisions and resist temptations.

By prioritizing important tasks in the morning, when our willpower reserves are at their highest, we increase the likelihood of successfully completing them.

  3. Mood and Motivation - Accomplishing significant tasks early in the day can positively influence our mood and motivation, setting a productive tone for the rest of the day.

*It’s important to note, that not everyone may experience a positive mood in the mornings initially (my lovely fiancé can attest).

Continued benefits to completing the most important tasks first thing ...

Reduced Procrastination (our most important) - As the day progresses, distractions and interruptions inevitably arise, making it easier to procrastinate on your important tasks and goals.

Excuses are hard to find in the morning time!

While these benefits are widely recognized, scientific research also provides evidence to support the notion of prioritizing tasks in the morning.

Studies have shown that individuals tend to have higher levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with alertness and focus, in the early hours of the day.

Additionally, research in the field of chronobiology suggests that our biological clocks, or circadian rhythms, influence cognitive function and productivity, with many people experiencing peak alertness and performance in the morning.

*Quick tip- we’re emphasizing your existing personal goals that demand consistency, rather than suggesting you tack on a 5k run before 7 am.

By carving out time at the outset of the day, we establish a foundation of discipline and self-care that permeates other areas of our lives.

The transition from hitting the snooze button to lacing up your sneakers may not happen overnight, but with consistent effort, it soon becomes second nature.

In essence, the practice of 'first things first' reminds us of the importance of prioritizing our goals and commitments.

The concept of waking up as the future self you desire is essential.

By tackling our most challenging tasks first thing in the morning, we harness the power of momentum and set ourselves up to be our higher-status selves.

Your body and mind will thank you for it - after all, your future self knows best!

Seize the morning, and the rest will follow suit.
